Taking to the stage!

5th December, 2017 by Katie

We've a couple of regular performers here in the office and so I thought I'd pitch in with my own involvement on the stage.

In the past I've performed in a few school plays (once taking a lead as Pitti-Sing in the Mikado) and have always enjoyed having a go on stage. I’d neglected my love for performing for a while... then along came the opportunity to be in 'The Producers' by Mel Brooks here. Not quite the West End, but a brilliant amateur dramatic production at the Z-Arts theatre.

The group got together about 6 months before the first scheduled show... some 30 + individuals from all walks of life, all ages and backgrounds. We slowly got to know each other, bonded together, learnt and enhanced skills (tap dancing, singing). One of the highlights for me was working with a fab choreographer (Hannah Davis) learning a dance routine using Zimmer frames! - It was a great dance that involved throwing ourselves around as little old ladies.

I was amazed at the way a limited budget could be stretched in the set design and production - the creative minds behind the stage management developed projections and clever lighting, which gave the impression of different rooms and settings, carrying the audience on a journey with us through the story.

It all culminated in early November when we played 5 fantastic shows to an appreciative audience of about 500 collectively across the run. To be part of this and have it all come together successfully for the 5 shows was incredible.

For me... well I gained more confidence and met a whole variety of new people who shared a love for musicals. I even benefited from teaching myself some tap-dancing basics and thoroughly intend to get involved in another down the line!
