The Wonders of Bamboo ...

On my recent holiday to Honk Kong and Vietnam I was totally amazed at (amongst other things) the incredible use of bamboo as scaffolding. The use of such a low tech item to work on amazing high tech buildings just left me gob smacked!
I then went on to buy a T-shirt and noticed it was also made from bamboo! The softness of the material in stark contrast to the strength needed for scaffolding.
Further reading up back home and I discover there's literally thousands of uses for bamboo and it appears in hundreds of products... like this bike
Bamboo has a lot going for it... it has the compressive force of concrete and the strength to weight ratio of steel, it's light so can easily be moved around, it grows quickly making it a highly sustainable material. Certain species of bamboo can grow 91 cm (3 ft) within a 24-hour period!
With modern engineering and creative design the opportunities for bamboo are 'growing'. Leading the way Ibuku architects and designers based in Bali are producing some amazing structures using local materials and craftsmen..
ohh and another product... I haven't tried this one yet but it looks promising - bamboo beer!
