Reach
Compassionate and supportive documentary with a positive outlook for people with upper limb deficencies
The birth of a child with any form of defect can be a huge shock to parents and other family members. Feelings of guilt, confusion, rejection and anger are all perfectly natural.
This 30 minute documentary was commissioned by Reach, a charity which supports those affected by upper limb deficiencies. Distributed on DVD and sent out to those encountering this condition for the first time, the film lets people know that they are not alone and shows how Reach can provide a network of support. It is also one heck of a powerful story.
Containing some intensely moving interviews with parents who found the whole matter extremely difficult to cope with, we go on to see how individuals have turned their circumstances into something positive.
We meet kids whose honesty just shines through. Some may go on to become budding musicians or athletes, but most are just normal kids.
Testimonial
A little example of the positive effects it is already having: Dan (my son) has been feeling a bit down about his arm at school. Before the holidays he was being asked lots of questions as the children in his year suddenly begin to notice that his arm is different and he was finding it difficult to deal with.
Having watched the DVD, he was desperate to take it school and give it to his teacher which we did this morning. She showed it to everyone in class (a bold move without having seen it!) and then got them all to do things like writing with their feet. Dan came home just buzzing with it all and said “If everyone sees this they’ll feel very stupid for saying ‘how did your arm get like that?’”. So thank you – a perfect example of how useful it can be.
